Earlier I could see a reflection of my headlights in a shop window and I noticed the inner bulbs in the headlight unit don't come on no matter what setting I put the lights on. It's the bulb that is nearest to the grille in each headlight. Is this correct?

that's the driving light, should come on with main beam.

Pop the bulbs out. You will probably find one is blown.

Thanks for your replys guys but I got the multimeter out and it appears there is no electricity going to those particular bulbs.
So I'm not sure how to proceed now, not familiar with sorting out these kind of problems lol

On my car the headlight is split into 2 segments. The outer part which takes up a good 2/3s of the unit and features the 5 watt bulb and that big 60/55w bulb. Then there's an inner section nearest to the grille that has a 55w bulb and that's the sucker that doesn't light up. Maybe this is why my main beam is so crap.

Here's a piccy to show which it is:

You checked all the fuses Kris? Not sure if they are on their own circuit, it may be possible

Hehe good idea, I hadn't thought of that, just assumed everything was ok if all the other lights are working.
EDIT: checked, can't see any that are "fused".
Hmm, is there a relay that operates main beam?

I'd have said so

You got a Haynes manual to check?

Yes but does that involve trying to read wiring diagrams?

I've checked Haynes. Says there's a resistor, I know where that is. And also a relay and something else. I know where they are too.
Haynes describes side lamp, head lamp, and driving lamp. It's the latter that are dead, as Borntobewild said.

And the dunce award goes to....
I made a slight mistake in technique when checking for power using a multimeter, so ermm, there is actually electricity there after all and it was just the bulb!

Oops
Well at least you have determined what the problem is.
Good luck replacing your bulbs.

Wel, better a dead bulb than an electrical problem
