What would be best oil to use for a 130k mi engine? Still 10w 40?
Cheers

as far as i know yes, you don't want to go too thin or fully synthetic.
having said that, i use Castrol RS 10W60, but that's within reason

ahh, well just change it with good 10W40 semi-synthetic and change the filter too.

I use a 5w-40 fully synth.

Rippthrough- Isn't that a little thin? I know fully synth is recommended for new cars but surely the Mi16 engine was never manufactured to the same tolerences as a new engine? It was designed over 15 years ago. Just my opinion, happy to be proved wrong

No, fully synth isn't any thinner than normal stuff
Just one of those rumours circulated on t'internet by people that should know better.

No, I know that ffs! 5w40 is thinner than 10w40, and so I was suggesting that that was too thin

Only when it's cold, and oil is so thick when cold that the thinner you can get it the better.

I never had any problems when I used 5w40 for a while but I went back to 10w40 because I figured that as I change my oil every 3 months it was throwing money down the drain. (and I usually only cover about 1 thousand miles in 3 months lol.

i always use the 10w-40w total/quantum stuff that GSF sells.
never had a problem with it. and it only cost £10 for 5lts

Yeah trouble is though they seem to have given up mail order for oil and my nearest GSF is 35 miles away.

There's no problem with running fully synths on the Mi engine. As Rippthrough pointed out, the main difference is the lubricating properties from cold. Good quality synthetic oils are always preferable over mineral oils in performance engines, due to higher thermal stability. The last thing you want is oil breaking down because it's getting too hot during over enthusiastic driving (Magnatec is possible the worst i have experienced for this). Mobil 1 is expensive but very good. Also tried Halfords own fully synth on a trackday out of interest and performed excellent. Millers and Silkolene are also two good options.

Yeah I like Halfords fully synthetic. They've also recently brought out a a performance version of their fully synthetic that is 5w50 if I remember correctly.

My bro has just tried some of that Halfords fully synth track day oil. For 'track days and enthusiastic driving' as it says on the label. Roughly translates into 'for cars that get well and truly nailed'
