Hi Guys

I don't know whether any of you can help. When i start my phase 1 1988 Mi16 most of the time i can hear the ABS pump pressurising then after about a minute the abs light goes of. I believe this is the bendix system. How ever a couple of times recently the pump has not worked and i end up with no brake pedal, it sinks right to the floor under pressure (and i nearly ended up in a brick wall!!!) reading the haynes manaul it states that if the abs fails the normal breaking system should not be affected, can anyone help? I don't know where to start and am now a tad worried about driving it!
Any help much appreciated
Thanks

Mike

I thought the Bendix system was not fail safe? I'm surprised it lasted this long. All Australian delivered models were fitted with the Bosch system for this reason. If the ABS fails, it resorts to the normal master cylinder/servo unit.

I had a Bendix equipped Mi16 that was privately imported into Australia. I ended up pulling it all out and fitting standard brakes.

Is it fairly straight forward to swap the exisiting system for a standard system? Or are there major modifications needed?

Cheers

Just wondering if anyone knows of anyone that can overhaul a bendix system / fix. I don't know how many E reg standard Mi16's are about but it would be nice to keep it as per original spec. Or shall I rip it to pieces and have some fun (throttle bodies, race cam's big brakes etc etc etc)
What do people think?

I have ripped the Bendix system out for that very reason, When it fails you have no Brakes and fitted a normal servo and non ABS Brakes in Kris's car when I had it.
I doubt anyone will do anything with it AFAIK the 405 was the only car that used it so in the UK alone would rule any repair out at a guess.
As said It must be one of the last with a working system on it
Mr Teflon
I have the Bendix system on my Mi.

After a few teething problems (!) from a loose connection on a relay under the dash it now works perfectly.

I would suggest however, if your pump is no longer pressurising then you may have a more terminal problem. Check the supply to it, you may just have an electrical fault.

I have a spare new ECU for the brakes if you think you need one. Original price was something like £1000 plus vat blink.gif
