Hi, i gave the brakes an overhaul at the weekend (new pads, new discs, new fluid, un-seized the slider and the pistons) and although the brakes actually work now the pedal is still really soft and goes quite far to the floor. I've heard of this happening on 405's before, any tips on how to get a decent pedal.

check that the rear brakes are bled properly, and that the load compensator isn't seized.

they are a bit of a PITA to bleed as the rear needs to be under load to open the compensator.

what pads did you use?

Ah thats a good idea as i had the car on axle stands when i bled them. I used some Ferrodo Premeier pads. The front pads that i removed were Galfer items How long has it been since Galfer sold anything in this country, they were properly wanked though.

probably original pads, or dealer replaced at least, Galfer still supply a fair bit of O.E peugeot stuff.

I just asked as the ph1 rear calipers have the bleed nipples pointing downwards so the caliper needs to be unbolted so you can bleed it properly

the only time I've seen that is when a brake caliper had been fitted upside down...

P1 and 2 rear calipers are the same too!

Both my Phase 1 405s have had the same arrangement, you cant fit it upside down as the handbrake mechanism won't line up!

sounds like VW golf calipers then, they're the same but have the handbrake mechanism at the bottom with the nipple at the top, identical apart from that

405 rear calipers certainly have the bleed nipples pointing down as standard, at least FWD versions.

Caliper must be unbolted and put a piece of wood between piston and far side of caliepr to avoid that the piston pops out.

Jack up the right side rear trailingarm to open up the load valve and start bleeding.

Yes they are. No need for special tricks when bleeding. And the handbrake axle is at the bottom of the caliper -> it won't seize easily. X4-calipers are used in many VAG-cars, but 2wd 405s have unique calipers.
