Simple question really... need to top the the transfer box on a mates M16x4 I have no idea what grade of oil to use as it's not covered in the Haynes manual and he doesn't have a handbook... What's recommended?

Cheers

hmm i thought i had repied to this already huh.gif.

anyway, you need 80W90 differential oil, syntethic would be good as it
absorbs the heat better and gives a little bit less transmission losses
than mineral oil.

or better yet, 75W140 - i use Castrol SAF-X.

p.s. don't mix the oils (if you meant that with "top it up"), but replace it
completely - you'll need a bit under 2 liters - 1.8 iirc.

hope this helps.

Don't fill the transfer box above the lower level mark on the dip stick.

Anymore than this and it can blow oil out the dipstick tube which then runs down onto the exhaust...and can catch fire.
