Full Version: Considering Breaking My 405 T16

it will be 5 years in feburary since i got it (wow, time flies ohmy.gif) after looking around
for 6 months and then intensively searching for one to buy for another 6 months.
what's worst is that in those 5 years, i've done about 10k km's (6k miles) with it
and it's spent at least half of that time just sitting undriveable, due to a few issues.
though i've not had any terminal or large issues but mainly the ongoing saga with
the hydraulic clutch system mad.gif

since it's currently undriveable too and winter is coming, it is destined to just sit
there broken for another few months and even then i won't have much time to
attend to it due to the 205 Mi32 project and also my wish to (finally) rebuild my
tired 205 GTI next year.

what i also need is a car that i don't need a bootful of spares and tools for, that
i can jump in and finally come to the UK without worrying about anything, so it
seems that the most sensible thing to do at the moment is to break it and sell
the engine and drivetrain (since i can't afford to keep the engine and put it into
the 205 or something) and then use the shell with all the toys for a Mi16 FWD,
which would still be reasonably fast and pretty reliable.

or the other option is to make it an SRI (using one of my spare 8v engines),
sell it and then get something completely different - a newer generation car
with a turbodiesel engine, like 206 SW, Partner/Berlingo or even Espace.

i know i will regret it as it only takes one ride to remember why i love it so much
and i wouldn't be able to part with it. but then when it's standing for a few months
it doesn't feel like my car at all and i look at it like it's just a piece of old metal.

i've had many offers for the engine during the years and several times i thought
about breaking the car, but each time i'd fixed it, i wouldn't sell it for a world, but
this time the feeling that selling it is the right thing to do is a bit stronger unsure.gif...

it still may not be too late to talk me out of it smile.gif but i'll be posting provisional
for sale thread to "test the water" very soon.

thanks.

Just read this on the drivers forum. It would be a real shame to have to break it. Like a few people said on there, would it not be better just to sell it as a whole car? How about getting a 405 SRi or something similar that will use one of your 8v engines. That should be a reliable car.

At the the end of the day it is your car though, so you have to do what you need to do, but it must be heartbreaking to have to strip down a car that you've owned and loved for 5 years sad.gif

as i said on there, i WOULD sell it complete IF i could drive it!

still having trouble with the f***ing hydraulic clutch system and the last time
i started the engine (i start it regularly) the fuel pump died! that's because
not being driven is worse for a car than being driven hard sad.gif.

i also hate to see people breaking good cars, especially 405 T16's, if they
don't do it with a very good reason, but i've got one.

p.s. i don't like ph1 405's and there are only a few 405 SRI/Mi16's around anyway,
not to mention LeMans or something like that, but they're not in good condition
really and used cars are pretty expensive here as we can't import cars older than
7 years old (which means i'm not able to import any more 405 T16's or 205 GTI's
for that matter ohmy.gif sad.gif).

that would be an awful idea sad.gif
Is it a left hand car?

Maybe there soms dutch people looking for a t16 on our forum.
But it would be an big trip to get it to the netherlands.

Change engine, and convert it to 2 wheel drive( I do not know if it technicaly represents any problems, but you mentioned it as solution). You will be little slower, but with same great handling(with some loss of traction), and look of the turbo.
cybernck
ofcourse it's an LHD car (they only ever came in LHD anyway wink.gif).

and shipping by truck and to your door is easy via specialised companies smile.gif.

i'll try holland, but i'll try to sell it in the UK first.

yeah that's the plan... and then see if i'd be sattisfied with that.

but i think i'd try to sell it and then get something newer for the use i need it.

thanks.
