Ok, this debate has raged on for a while amongst enthusiasts, but....
What does Mi16 officially stand for?
I was thinking it was '
Motronic
Injection
16 valve'
Anyone heard anything different? It might not stand for anything at all

Hehe imagine the look you'd get if you walked into the main dealer and said "Hi, I don't want to buy a new car but can you tell me please what the Mi bit of Mi16 stands for?"

Defintely Multipoint Injection 16v
And it has the good thing of being one of the most bad ass car names ever

Odd though because multipoint injection wasn't exactly brand new back then.

I know what you mean, Triumph were using multipoint injection back in the late 60's!

Well, whatever it means it sounds good.

It wasn't new but it was an indication of a top end model to have it fitted. It was probably just marketing. Tells everyone else exactly why your car is so quick.

Yeah, sounds a lot better than plain old GTi

405 GTi just doesn't sound right

I'd never thought of how badly GTI goes with 405.

i'm sure Mi16 didn't stand for Multipoint/Motronic Injection, but can't remember now.
it wouldn't get called 405 GTI either way, it would be 405 GTI16 in that case.

I've seen a car badged as a 405 GTI. It looked like a base-model (steel wheels, crap interior, etc...). According to the badges on the rear is was a "405 GTI Kompressor Intercooler Turbo Type-R"

Funnily enough, if it wasn't to be called the legendary mi16, then I think the sri's name goes well with 405!! I know this was used for the 8v, but it still sounds quite good IMHO.

the name "GTi" is too common place now, thank god they only called the 405 "Mi16"

Not only that the GTI badges and other badges such as XSI put insurance up quite a bit.
(I was looking at Parkers guide tother day, bloody 307 Feline [180bhp] is less insurance group than 307 xsi [138bhp])

Just to clear this one up, i worked for peugeot for many years (during the release of the Mi16) and this is a quote from the marketing dept....
"the new 405 flagship will be the 405 Mi16 (Motronic Injection 16 valves)"
so, its motronic people, not multipoint.

it wont mean multipoint injection because multi poiny imjection is noted down as mpi plus multi point injection wouldent make it as fast as it is

Does that mean you have to take the badge off if you go over to throttlebodies?

I'm a bit gutted now. I know that Motronic is better than crappy Jetronic but it's not exactly worth naming a car after some german chap from Bosch's name for a management system. The coolness factor of the name has just dropped to about 0.
At least multipoint injection showed a way forward towards a performance vehicle and it's only due to multipoint injection (could have been any management) and 16v's that the Mi is faster than the SRi which is why that would be a more natural assumption for the name. My years of admiration have been killed by some cheap Peugeot / Bosch marketing.

I can just see the ebay advert now:
"Genuine reason for sale - badge isn't as cool as it used to be..."
